Please explain how I can tell how fast a machine is and just how big of a hard drive the average person needs?

Power/speed is determined by memory, graphics memory, processor, hard drive speed, as the 4 most critical items.

Windows 7 computers should have at least 4 Gb of memory (this is max for 32 Bit Windows while I recommend 64 Bit Windows 7 which can have higher memory for future upgrades or initial purchase);

Graphics memory should be at least 512mb;

Processor should be at least dual core and 2.0GHz minimum speed for dual core;

Desktop hard drives should be at least 7200 rpm and laptops 5400 rpm. Drives should also be a minimum SATA 3.0.

Because today's software takes more space, 500Gb is the minimum hard drive I recommend. Hard drives for desktops are relatively inexpensive, and because of that, 1Tb is my drive of choice (2x 500Gb). I actually prefer a 500Gb drive for programs and then a separate 500Gb or 1Tb for data. This link explains my reasoning (and goes even further with a 3rd backup drive if you have critical data to protect).
